“It’s a good thing I was born a girl, otherwise I’d be a drag queen.” Dolly Parton
This week has been a week of flora, fauna, music and sequins.
We have discovered quite a few critters that love to share our home surroundings. David installed the hummingbird feeder in the patio and sitting here writing this I’m getting quite a territorial spectacle as they fly in for positions under the awning.
There is a family of Mexican Fox Squirrels, shorter and fatter than its NOB cousins, and with very long, bushy tails, that parades back and forth on top of our back wall. We also spotted about 3 tabbies next door; one of them sits on the wall and stares into our kitchen, picture forthcoming.
David has spent more than one afternoon photographing and identifying birds … here are just a few……..
Altamira Oriole
Bullock’s Oriole
Blue-gray gnatcatcher
Great Kiskadee
Golden-fronted Woodpecker
Gila Woodpecker
We have had grasshoppers, praying mantis, a big ugly, black bug and beautiful butterflies galore.
Working with the gardener this week to finely detail the yard – it was in dire need and should take about 2 weeks to bring up to my standards.
We have discovered The Spotlight Club, a local cabaret venue in San Antonio Tlayacapan, the town next to Ajijic. It’s a very nice space with very eclectic performing acts scheduled.
Last Sunday we listened to Sexteto, a Cuban Group, currently on tour throughout Mexico; two of its members previously played with The Buena Vista Social Club…….they infused a lot of “Sabor” – starting with Qui Quiri Bun Mandinga, jumping to El Cuarto de Tula, and ending the evening with Guantanamera, it was very hard for me to keep it together. Felt as proud as a peacock to know that my tiny island has introduced to the world so much happy, great music.
On Friday night we were back to the Spotlight for the “Crazy Bitches” Drag show -another sold-out event. The Dolly Parton impersonator was so over the top that he did a 360 and ended up on the bottom…….I laughed so hard that I ached and almost pipi’d my pants. Of course, there were other luminaries: Cher, Adele, Liza with a Z, Pink, but it was Tina who stole the show – closing with Proud Mary and inviting the audience on Stage. You did not have to ask our friend, Mike, he bolted out of his seat.
They played very well to a mixed audience of retirees…..with a few off-the-cuff songs. One of them that I’m thinking of telling the Boobé Sisters (those at our wedding will never forget them) to add to their repertoire ……..as good as their version of Downtown is this one that took the prize – you fill in the blanks……..first you “L… it” then you “S…. it.”
Saturday was “Thrill the World,” a Dance-off to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” … bringing people from across the planet together in one simultaneous, synchronized dance of the song in our time zone at 4pm. Mike’s better half, Darryl, was one of the participating zombies (having a gay old time), so we got ourselves to the Malecón to watch close to 100 zombies of all ages dancing in this annual event. Some of the costumes were quite elaborate.
Next week …trying to solve how to expand our current internet home coverage.
