” Winter is coming.” from Game of Thrones

(Re)watching the show was how I spent most of my hours this week . . . re-living with a vengeance the first two seasons of this great and thundering series. It’s filled with political and psychological intrigue, shining characters, twisted and unraveling plot lines, and a dash of fantasy.

On to……….April 14th for the final season to begin.

Not all my hours were dedicated to “GOT.” I also found time for some volunteer work translating participating new artist Bios for this year’s Feria Maestros del Arte. With some slight trepidation, I answered the email call for a translator; not knowing exactly what I’d be getting involved with. Well, seems I passed the test because I was also asked to be involved with their monthly newsletter y claro que si, I’ll lend un Mano 🖐.

We also attended another cultural event, but this time will leave the write up to David. This is a cut and paste from an email sent to a friend who missed seeing the show . . .

“Have to share with you an incredible show, “Roots” – the performance was sensational. The talent that exists here Lakeside is extraordinary. And the exuberant, young mariachi band that accompanied the choral singers added a significant local flavor ~ “Sabor de México.”

Laura, our “goat farmer,” is part of the Sextet, and she was outstanding and quite radiant. The 33 ladies on stage (I counted) all wore black gowns and each wore a Mexican serape over it in one of four different bright colorations. The 19 suave hombres all wore tuxes. The lively program included many familiar traditional folk/“roots” songs from France, Canada, the USA & Mexico.

The sold out crowd was enthusiastic per national interest, but certainly united in sharing cultural affinities – who doesn’t know “Alouette” or “Cielito Lindo” to sing along with?! Steven Foster and Scott Joplin, both American geniuses, added to the inspirational songs chosen to ignite the crowd. “Guadalajara” was certainly a favorite, too.”

Now back to my observations – of course during every performance at Lakeside an ex-pat feels the need to stand out. This time it was during the singing of “Dixie’s Land.” A proud Southern couple stood up during the rousing performance to my left, and as the man placed his right hand over his heart……….. I had to control myself for not shouting out, “… sit the hell down, you lost the war!”

We celebrated our friend, Cheryl’s, birthday at our favorite restaurant, Teocintle Maíz. This being of the infamous scene if you recall where I was “ too loud” to a group of ole biddies. Tonight there were other tables talking and laughing at even higher decibels than me. The service and food are the best at Lakeside and the owners Ricardo and Gloria, (the chef) are beyond hospitable…….and they make a great margarita!

On the menu, this week: simple seared scallops (Costco) accompanied with cauliflower au gratin (pre-roasted the cauliflower then smothered with a sauce made with a blend of cheeses and rebaked till golden brown) … discovered that by roasting the cauliflower it stays firm and not mushy when drenched with yummy-ness.
