”Watching birds has become part of my daily meditation affirming my connection to the earth body. “ Carol P Christ
You all know of David’s love and appreciation of the beauty of colibríes . . . hummingbirds . . . well I, too have become smitten. I sit in the early mornings on our terrace with iPad in one hand and cafecito in the other as I catch up with the news. However, I easily become distracted and transfixed by the feeding frenzy as I watch over a dozen hummingbirds feeding on David’s nectar. He’s now boiling up 4-5 cups daily of pure white cane sugar which we buy 10 kilos at a time at Costco. He mixes it with bottled water ~ nothing but the best.
In the beginning, we had one to three birds and now I think the word’s out about the quality of his nectars. Our single, six-feeder is at the stage where reservations are needed since they’re hovering and bullying their way in for a spot. I even witnessed were two birds actually squeezed both their beaks into a single hole! Well, at this point we need to expand to another location. See the photo below and try to count how many appear.
Horseback riding with sandals or hiking shoes does not make for a cool look, so this week it was off to the big Abastos Market in Guadalajara in search of boots. Lots of choices, but I was looking for easy side zippers, making my choices limited . . . found a pair that was just a bit dressy, but comfortable as an old shoe….wore them out of the store. Now I will be styling when riding 😎
For someone that does not like Reality TV shows or is very keen on kids, David’s guilty pleasure is “Outdaughtered.” A new season just started and he just laughs himself silly with the quintuplets’ adorable antics…….I don’t know about him, but Hazel (wears glasses) has been my favorite from day one. Too darn cute!
This week we got a very unexpected and exciting text message. Our friends, Ginger, and Larry, generously extended an invitation to join them for a week in Playa Del Carmen ~ the Riviera Maya. They have a timeshare villa there and it took us about two seconds to say ¡sí sí! and two minutes to book our domestic flights (2 hrs. 45 min). So looking forward to a few days of white sandy beaches, cocktails (Tequila Time!), good food, great company, lots of laughter, and yes – maybe a side trip to climb “Chicken Pizza” (Chichen Itzá).
We got our first torrential downpour Lakeside to officially start the rainy season (June-Nov). All night long was continuous, rolling thunder (the big booms bouncing off the canyon walls and mountains) with endlessly flashing lightning that lit the entire sky. I can’t wait for the mountains to turn luscious green. And suddenly, these gigantic moths have invaded our terrace…..totally harmless … locals call them Polilla.
David’s been buying a handcrafted corn husk flower or two each week at the Tianguis. The lovely indigenous ladies from across the Lake create a beautiful variety in their small pueblo … it’s hard to choose from. Needless to say, we now have a vibrant bouquet of assorted, colorful flowers. He’s even placed a special order for custom work next week. Our avocado guy thankfully reappeared after being AWOL because of shortages Prices went up ~ now a dollar apiece for these perfect, big specimens.
On the menu this week . . . David did the bulk of the cooking (!) . . . a tasty pot of minestrone soup, which he made from scratch with a roasted vegetable stock base, but his pièce de résistance was a deconstructed Mediterranean Nicoise Salad prepared with lentils, baby red potatoes, tuna, queso fresco, roasted red peppers, fresh basil, red onions, olives, and hard-boiled eggs all tossed in a light vinaigrette.
Next week is the DMV, we have an appointment this time, let’s see how long it takes.
