And that was what Mi Negrita meant to me, a thing of Beauty and Joy.

It’s with a heavy and saddened heart that I must tell of Mi Negrita’s sudden passing in a freaky electrical accident at the farm.

Our bonding was instant and our respect for each other grew with every ride.

Soon after our first ride, I started bringing her carrots, sliced lengthwise and halved. My riding group kept telling me that I was spoiling her, but who best to spoil. She was my Mimosa.

The minute she spotted me she would neigh; which I took two ways – either I’m so happy to see you or hurry up with my carrots already. I always took it to be the former, but honestly, if someone is bringing you sweets wouldn’t you want them to hurry up?!

There was the time when we both took a tumble when her back legs buckled under her on the slippery pavement and me sliding off her back, in what seemed to be slow motion …earning the nickname of Rico Suave bestowed upon me by our group leader, Sally. I guess if you can gracefully fall off a horse, I did it. While checking on her, I felt I could see the worried look in her eyes asking, “I’m ok, but are you?”

Her long legs usually put her way ahead of the pack. There was a magic spot between her trot and her gallop and when we hit it, she was smooth as glass and I felt we could go on for hours.

She always towered above all the other horses at 17 1/2 hands. I was almost vertically challenged when it came to getting onto the saddle and needing a bit of help: a big stone, a log, the rim of the sidewalk. But once on the saddle, it was a happy place to be.

I will terribly miss her and I’m greatly saddened by the loss of a good friend, but the memories live forever.

Happy Trails……..

  1. Oh no. So sad. I’m so sorry, Sergio. What electrical accident could possibly occur on a farm? At first I thought she was hit by lightning, but I guess that isn’t exactly how you’d phrase it if she were. I know how these rides were one of the highlights of your life. We need to plant a tree or plant for her in the lower lot. Let me know what you’d like for me to plant. xoxoxo

  2. WOW, losing your” bestie” and animal soul mate is the saddest thing! So sorry to hear this. YOU will need to “get back in the saddle” soon. (Or have you?) Until then, love your quotes, thoughts, colors, and life of love in MEXICO! Until our next Christmas party . . . Sunshine and hummingbirds to you both!

  6. There are no words to describe the loss of a horse. Until you have experienced the heart, the love, the trust of one of these incredible creatures, you cannot feel the emptiness of that loss. My heart is sad for you but the memories you have will always be a very special gift that not many people can even imagine. Hold on tight to that gift!

  7. What a beautiful tribute to Negrita. I’ll miss her too. I want to go through my trailblazers album and send you every photo I have of you and her, but I’m pretty sure you have all of them too.

  8. Sergio; I am so very sorry for your loss. Negrita was a beautiful horse who is now running through fields of sweet grass. I believe that one day we will all be rejoined with our best friends. God bless always to you both.
