“Don’t waste words on people who deserve your silence. Sometimes the most powerful thing to say is nothing at all.” Mandy Hale
And that basically speaks for my particular thoughts in reviewing tonight’s Off-Broadway play, “Happy Talk,” starring Susan Sarandon and written by actor/playwright, Jesse Eisenberg. The staging was a beautiful open living room and kitchen in New Jersey. It was fairly humorless and a trite bit of wasted star material.
On this trip we’re not rushing around from museum to museum nor are we walking ourselves to death – no High Line (although I somehow logged 9,627 steps today!). Daytime is devoted to simple shopping to buy stuff difficult or impossible to buy in México. Such as …
A quick trip to Bed Bath and Beyond (loaded w/coupons!) looking for some items to cross off David’s 10-mile long list (such as Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap, etc.). We made a quick stop at TJ’s again … this time I got to experience a sea of people, shelves being constantly restocked and emptied at the same time, employees trying to keep people moving when exiting the escalators. This is a two-story store, and as David waited in one of two lines that wrapped itself around inside the store, I counted 31 cashiers, about 25 open. I would like to see numbers, but I bet their San Pedro, CA store gets a whole lot fewer people in a week than this place gets in an afternoon.
Stopped in nearby Lincoln Center area at a fave cafe, Fiorello’s, for some soup (it started drizzling) and their special dish of “Carciofi alla giudea,” Roman-Jewish Fried Artichokes that are crispy and tasty.
We met David’s other BBF from his days working in the NYC fashion industry, Jamie and his partner, Mubi and Kim for Happy Hour drinks and munchies before tonite’s performance. They retold tales of their days in fashion hell which Jamie and Kim are still knee deep into. Jamie bought a house in NJ last year that is 104 years old. It’s been re-wired, re-plumbed, 9 layers of wall paper removed and got a brand new kitchen. From the finished pictures it looks quite beautiful … guess we’ll be crashing in NJ next visit!
Tomorrow: Breakfast with another “fashion” friend, matinee and dinner with La Familia Bershad.
